If there is one outstanding beauty in Portland, Oregon, my vote goes to this laceleaf maple that shines the brightest in late fall at the Japanese Garden. I was fortunate to see it in its full glory when I passed through the city last Sunday on my way home to Seattle. Five years ago, I visited too early in October to enjoy the best color.

That is a famous maple. How many photographers did you have to elbow aside to get the shot? ;)

I can see why. There was one fellow with a tripod and a woman with her smartphone. He took multiple shots while the sun was setting and didn’t budge from his spot. I finally had to excuse myself and moved in to take my shots. This is the problem with photographers with tripods under these kinds of limited-space situations.
